How a line interactive unit protects the load
Line interactive: utility power passes through an AVR transformer that corrects sags and swells, and the transfer switch moves the load to battery when the utility drops.

- AVR700U: 700 VA / 350W. Desktop with extra peripherals, second monitor, NAS, small switch.
- AVR750U: 750 VA / 450W. Slightly heavier desktop workload, small POS terminal.
- AVR900U: 900 VA / 480W. Power-user desktop, content-creator workstation, small server in a home lab.
- AVR1000U: 1000 VA / 500W. Dual-monitor power workstation, light gaming, small office equipment cluster.
- AVR1200U / AVR1500U: 1200-1500 VA. Top of the AVR range for desktop UPS, edge of where you’d consider stepping up to OmniSmart or SmartPro instead.

AVR battery replacement
AVR Series units use an internal sealed lead-acid battery, usually a 12V 7-9Ah cell, or paired cells for the higher-VA models. Battery life is typically 3-5 years, sometimes shorter in warm environments or if the unit sees frequent discharge cycles. Signals it’s time to replace:
- The unit’s status light goes amber or red and stays there
- The UPS beeps continuously even on good mains power
- Runtime during an outage drops to seconds instead of minutes
- Self-test (held front-panel button) fails

When to upgrade from AVR to OmniSmart or SmartPro
The AVR Series is right-sized for single-workstation desktop protection. The signs it’s time to step up to a heavier UPS:
- Adding a small server or NAS: the AVR battery probably won’t carry the load long enough for safe shutdown. Move to OmniSmart or SmartPro.
- Adding a switch and access points: small-office networking gear typically wants more runtime than the AVR delivers under load.
- Connecting medical or sensitive electronics: step up to a true sine-wave online UPS (SmartOnline) rather than simulated sine wave.
- Need network monitoring or SNMP: the AVR Series doesn’t accept a network card. SmartPro or SmartOnline does.
Migration paths to current-generation Eaton
When an AVR unit reaches end-of-life and the replacement battery cost no longer makes sense, the natural Eaton equivalent is:
- Eaton 3S: direct equivalent for AVR550U-AVR1500U. Same desktop form factor, line-interactive with AVR, USB shutdown.
- Eaton 5S: half-step up if you’ve outgrown the AVR’s runtime or want LCD status.
