Picking the right Tripp Lite line for the application

The first decision when deploying or replacing a Tripp Lite UPS is topology (standby, line-interactive or online double-conversion) followed by capacity and form factor. The quick framework we use when scoping a site:

• SOHO desktop, light office, home internet edge: OmniVS (basic standby) for the cleanest power environments; AVR Series (line-interactive with AVR) where there are brownouts or sags worth conditioning.
• Retail POS, small business mini-rack, branch-office IT closet: OmniSmart (line-interactive mini-tower) for sub-1500 VA loads; SmartPro (line-interactive tower or 2U rack) once the load mix needs SNMP monitoring or pushes past 900W steady.

Battery replacement, the most common service request across the entire range

Whatever Tripp Lite UPS family you run, the battery is the consumable. Sealed lead-acid cartridges across the SmartPro / OmniSmart / AVR / OmniVS / BC Pro families typically run 3-5 years before the front-panel “Replace Battery” indicator lights up, shorter in warm or poorly-ventilated environments, shorter again in sites with frequent discharge cycles. Rack-mount SmartOnline systems use internal hot-swap modules (RBC93-2U, RBC94-2U) for the 1-3 kVA chassis and external BP-series battery cabinets (BP48V60RT3U, BP72V60RT-3U, BP240V100) for 5 kVA and up. Three-phase SmartRack runs on external battery cabinets, strings of 32-40 VRLA cells or, increasingly, lithium-ion cabinets with extended cycle life.

• Battery replacement: ship-to-you OEM-compatible packs with printed swap card and phone support; or on-site service including disposal under Environment Canada hazardous waste regulations and a written capacity-test report.
• On-site repair: inverter and PFC fault diagnosis on SmartOnline and SmartRack; relay weld and cooling-fan replacement on the smaller line-interactive units; bench repair at our Canadian warehouse for desktop and SOHO chassis that travel well.
• Preventive maintenance contracts: quarterly visits for three-phase SmartRack with full capacitor inspection, battery capacity test and log review; annual or semi-annual for SmartOnline and SmartPro; bulk PM scheduling for multi-site retail and education estates running OmniSmart / AVR / OmniVS.
• WEBCARDLX network management: SNMP configuration, firmware updates, replacement on SmartPro and SmartOnline chassis. Integration with PRTG, Nagios, SolarWinds, EcoStruxure IT.
• Migration planning: for legacy units approaching end-of-service-life, drop-in consulting from our service network covering site survey, runtime sizing, outlet and breaker mapping, rack rail conversion, and decommission of the legacy chassis.

Migration paths to current-generation Eaton

Tripp Lite was acquired by Eaton in 2021. The legacy Tripp Lite lines are gradually being repositioned within Eaton’s broader portfolio, with each Tripp Lite family mapping to a natural Eaton successor:

• OmniVS / AVR Series → Eaton 3S: same desktop form factor, standby or line-interactive with AVR, USB shutdown.
• OmniSmart → Eaton 5S: mini-tower line-interactive with LCD; or Eaton 5SC for a small rack-mount option.
• SmartPro → Eaton 5SC or 5PX G2: direct drop-in for 1500-3000 VA SmartPro; step up to 9PX where the application calls for online double-conversion.
• SmartOnline → Eaton 9PX G2 (1-11 kVA): like-for-like rack-mount, online double-conversion, hot-swap batteries; or Eaton 9SX for cost-sensitive sites; or 93PM / 93PX for sites that have outgrown rack-mount.
• SmartRack three-phase → Eaton 93PM, 93PX, 9395P: current three-phase portfolio, hot-swap modules, parallel-N+1, transformer-free, VRLA or Li-ion battery cabinets.
