The OmniSmart line (Tripp Lite, now part of Eaton) covers 450-1500 VA in a compact upright chassis with LCD status, USB shutdown and outlet-level protection. How a line interactive unit protects the load
Line interactive: utility power passes through an AVR transformer that corrects sags and swells, and the transfer switch moves the load to battery when the utility drops.
Tripp Lite OmniSmart models we service
OmniSmart sits a step above the OmniVS basic standby line, it’s line-interactive with AVR, capable of handling brownouts and sags without dropping to battery, and has enough capacity for a typical SOHO IT setup or retail POS lane:
- OMNI500LCD: 500 VA / 300W mini-tower. Single workstation plus monitor and small accessory.
- OMNI650LCD: 650 VA / 350W. Workstation with NAS or small switch.
- OMNI900LCD: 900 VA / 475W. Small office cluster, workstation, monitor, switch, router, VoIP phone.
- OMNI1000LCD: 1000 VA / 500W. Small server, NAS, switch and workstation combined.
- OMNI1500LCDT: 1500 VA / 940W. Top of the OmniSmart range, small business server room, retail backroom, edge of where you’d move up to SmartPro instead.
- OMNISMART350 / OMNISMART450: entry-level legacy units still in active service.
Common deployment contexts
- Retail POS: point-of-sale terminals, receipt printers, payment terminals and the small router/switch behind them. Outages and brownouts cause transaction loss; OmniSmart absorbs them.
- Branch office mini-rack: a 4-6U wall-mount or under-desk rack with a switch, a small server or NAS, and a UPS. OMNI1500LCDT is the typical sizing.
- Small medical office: front-desk PC, EMR workstation, lab printer, and the local network. OmniSmart keeps the practice running through short outages and protects sensitive medical electronics.
- SOHO server closet: home-based small business with one or two servers, the OmniSmart provides 10-15 minutes of runtime for graceful shutdown.
- Education / classroom AV: projector, classroom PC, audio system in a single AV cabinet protected by an OmniSmart.
- Edge computing nodes: small IoT gateways, security camera NVRs, building-automation controllers.
OmniSmart battery replacement
OmniSmart units use internal sealed lead-acid batteries, typically a single 12V 7-9Ah cell in the smaller models, paired cells in 900-1500 VA models. Service life is 3-5 years, shorter in warm environments. The amber “Replace Battery” indicator on the LCD is the clearest signal it’s time. Replacement batteries we supply:
| OmniSmart model | Battery |
|---|---|
| OMNI500LCD / OMNI650LCD | RBC005 (12V 7Ah SLA, OEM-compatible) |
| OMNI900LCD / OMNI1000LCD | RBC020 (12V 9Ah SLA, OEM-compatible) |
| OMNI1500LCDT | Dual 12V 9Ah pack |
| OMNISMART350 / OMNISMART450 (legacy) | 12V 5-7Ah single cell, contact us for the right SKU |
Most OmniSmart battery swaps are user-doable from the front bezel, disconnect the existing battery’s connector, swap the cell, reconnect. We include a printed swap card with every shipped battery and we’re a phone call away if you hit a snag. More on Tripp Lite battery replacement →
Common OmniSmart issues
- “Replace Battery” LCD message: sealed lead-acid at end of life. Order the matching RBC.
- Continuous beeping with no apparent outage: usually a fault state. Check the LCD for the specific code, then call us.
- USB shutdown not working: Tripp Lite PowerAlert configuration or Windows USB driver. Often resolved by reinstalling PowerAlert.
- One outlet group works, other doesn’t: OmniSmart units have battery-backed outlets and surge-only outlets. Verify you’re plugged into the right group.
- UPS clicks under low load: AVR switching on small voltage variations. Usually normal; if frequent, check upstream power quality.
When to step up from OmniSmart to SmartPro
- Need SNMP / network monitoring: the OmniSmart doesn’t accept a network card. Move to SmartPro with WEBCARDLX.
- Load creeping past 900W steady: move to SmartPro 2200 or 3000 VA models for headroom.
- Need pure sine wave for medical or sensitive electronics: move to SmartOnline double-conversion.
- Need rack-mount: OmniSmart is tower-only. SmartPro or SmartOnline give you 2U rack options.
Migration paths to current-generation Eaton
- Eaton 5S: closest equivalent for OMNI650LCD-OMNI1500LCDT. LCD, USB, line-interactive with AVR, mini-tower form factor.
- Eaton 5SC: step up if you want a small rack-mount option and longer runtime.
