Tripp Lite SmartOnline
Tripp Lite SmartOnline service in Canada: SU1500/3000/5000/10000RT online double-conversion UPS battery replacement, inverter/PFC repair, WEBCARDLX configuration, migration to Eaton 9PX.
Tripp Lite SmartOnline service across Canada, true online double-conversion UPS protection for enterprise datacenters, mid-tier server rooms, healthcare imaging, and any site that needs the cleanest possible power waveform. The SmartOnline line (Tripp Lite, now part of Eaton following the 2021 acquisition) spans 1-20 kVA in rack and rack/tower convertible chassis, with hot-swap battery modules and SNMP network-card support. We service every SmartOnline generation in active deployment across Canada, battery cabinet replacement, inverter/PFC fault diagnosis, network card configuration, preventive maintenance contracts, and migration planning.
How an online unit protects the load
Double conversion: the load always runs on the inverter, so an outage produces no transfer gap. The static bypass exists for maintenance and overload, not for everyday sags.
Tripp Lite SmartOnline models we service
The SmartOnline family is Tripp Lite’s online double-conversion line, the topology that fully isolates connected loads from raw mains by continuously converting AC→DC→AC through the inverter. Pure sine wave output, zero transfer time, full voltage and frequency regulation. The models we encounter most often in Canadian enterprise IT:
- SU1500RTXLCD / SU1500RTXLCDN: 1.5 kVA / 1.35 kW 2U rack/tower. Mid-tier IT, healthcare workstation cluster, small datacenter rack.
- SU3000RTXLCD / SU3000RTXLCDN: 3 kVA / 2.7 kW 2U. The most-deployed SmartOnline in Canadian datacenter racks.
- SU5000RT3U / SU5000RT3UHV: 5 kVA / 4.5 kW 3U with external battery cabinet support. Larger rack loads, dense compute.
- SU6000RT3U / SU8000RT3U: 6-8 kVA. High-density enterprise racks, edge datacenter pods.
- SU10000RT3U / SU10000RT3UHV: 10 kVA / 9 kW. Large enterprise racks, healthcare imaging suites, broadcast.
- SU16KRT / SU20KRT: 16-20 kVA top of the rack-mount SmartOnline range, multi-rack datacenter pods.
- SUINT models: international voltage variants where the Canadian site has 208V or 240V input requirements.
Common deployment contexts
- Enterprise datacenter racks: colocation cabinets, on-prem datacenters and edge facilities where each rack runs a 3-6 kVA SmartOnline as primary protection.
- Healthcare imaging and EMR: MRI, CT and PACS servers, hospital EHR clusters, lab cold-storage controllers where the online topology protects against the surges and frequency drift that line-interactive can’t fully clean up.
- Broadcast and AV production: studio control rooms, automation servers, transmitter sites where pure sine wave and zero transfer time matter for sensitive electronics.
- Industrial control and SCADA: PLC racks, instrumentation rooms, mining and resource control centers where the SmartOnline isolates from harmonics-heavy industrial mains.
- Financial services: branch trading desks, regional datacenter pods, regulatory-driven continuity sites.
- Government IT: federal, provincial and municipal datacenter racks where tender specifications often call out double-conversion topology explicitly.
SmartOnline battery replacement
Rack-mount SmartOnline systems use sealed lead-acid battery modules, internal cartridges for the 1-3 kVA models, external BP-series battery cabinets for the 5 kVA and up. Typical service life is 3-5 years, with the heat profile inside a high-density rack often shortening that to 3-4 years. Replacement battery references we stock or quick-order:
| SmartOnline model | Replacement battery |
|---|---|
| SU1500RTXLCD / SU1500RTXLCDN | RBC93-2U (internal hot-swap module) |
| SU3000RTXLCD / SU3000RTXLCDN | RBC94-2U (internal hot-swap module) |
| SU5000RT3U + battery cabinet | BP48V60RT3U (48V / 60Ah cabinet) |
| SU6000RT3U / SU8000RT3U + battery cabinet | BP72V60RT-3U or BP72V37-3U |
| SU10000RT3U + battery cabinet | BP240V10RT3U (240V cabinet) |
| SU16KRT / SU20KRT | BP240V100 / BP240V200 floor-standing cabinet |
For internal hot-swap modules (1-3 kVA SmartOnline), the swap is non-disruptive, the unit stays online through its parallel battery feed during the cartridge change. For external cabinet systems (5 kVA and up), the cabinet itself stays online while individual battery strings are replaced under a controlled procedure; full cabinet replacement may require a maintenance bypass switch. We perform both. More on Tripp Lite battery replacement →
SmartOnline network management cards (WEBCARDLX)
SmartOnline rack-mount units accept the Tripp Lite WEBCARDLX network management card for SNMP monitoring, web management, email/SNMP alerts and graceful shutdown integration with VMware, Hyper-V and Linux hosts. We service:
- WEBCARDLX configuration, IP addressing, SNMP v1/v2c/v3, web UI hardening, certificate installation
- Firmware updates, staying current with security patches
- Replacement when a card fails or its supercap is dead
- Integration with Tripp Lite PowerAlert software and third-party tools (PRTG, Nagios, SolarWinds, EcoStruxure IT)
Common SmartOnline issues
- Inverter or PFC fault alarm: most common non-battery failure on rack-mount SmartOnline. Often a capacitor or single power-stage component. On-site diagnosis required.
- Battery disconnected: external cabinet breaker tripped, cabinet cable not seated, or a single battery in the string has failed open. Diagnostic work to isolate.
- Bypass mode stuck: unit transferred to internal bypass and won’t return to online. Usually points to inverter, charger or transfer-switch fault.
- Output frequency drift: input frequency tolerance settings or generator handoff configuration. Adjust via front panel or network card.
- Overtemperature trip: high-density rack with poor airflow. Check rack thermals before re-energizing.
Migration paths to current-generation Eaton
For sites running older SmartOnline units approaching end-of-service-life, Eaton’s current online double-conversion portfolio provides natural drop-in paths:
- Eaton 9PX G2 (1-11 kVA): direct drop-in for SU1500RTXLCD through SU10000RT3U. Same rack-mount footprint, online double-conversion, hot-swap internal batteries, network card slot.
- Eaton 9SX: value-positioned online double-conversion for cost-sensitive datacenter racks.
- Eaton 93PM / 93PX: step up to three-phase for sites that have outgrown rack-mount SmartOnline and need a modular single-phase or three-phase platform.
For migration from legacy Tripp Lite SmartOnline to current-gen Eaton 9PX, 5PX, or 5SC, our service network provides drop-in consulting, site survey, runtime sizing, breaker/outlet mapping, rack rail conversion and decommission/recycling of the legacy unit.
