On SmartPro SMART1050 and SMART1500, OmniSmart and BC Pro units, short beeps with a pause mean the Tripp Lite UPS is on battery; a continuous beep that cannot be silenced means the battery is nearly empty, so shut equipment down now. SmartOnline SU750 to SU3000RTXLCD2U units name each alarm and its code on the LCD.
The patterns differ by family, so start with the label on the front or back of the unit: the model number tells you which table below applies.
Beep and light patterns by family
| Family (manual) | On battery | Battery nearly empty | Overload | Weak or failed battery | Silencing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SmartPro SMART1050, SMART1500, SMART1500XL | POWER LED flashes; 4 short beeps, then a pause | LED turns red, alarm sounds continuously: shutdown is imminent | OUTPUT LOAD LEVEL LED red, alarm | BATTERY WARNING LED red, alarm sounds intermittently after a self-test | Briefly press MUTE/TEST; continuous alarms cannot be silenced |
| OmniSmart, BC Pro, Internet Office, SMART550USB, SMART750USB | BATTERY POWER light (yellow); a series of short beeps, then a brief pause | Continuous beep that cannot be silenced | OVERLOAD light red (select models) | REPLACE BATTERY light red after a self-test | Press and hold MUTE/TEST to silence the on-battery alarm |
| LCDT series SMART1500LCDT, OMNI1500LCDT, SMART1300LCDT | Not stated in the manual passages | The low battery alarm sounds even when the battery alarm is temporarily muted | Overload icon with the load percentage | Battery icon and alarm after a failed self-test | Press and hold the alarm button: silent mode (on line only) or a temporary mute on battery |
| SmartOnline SU750 to SU3000RTXLCD2U | Battery mode LED, 1 beep every 10 seconds | Battery low: 1 beep every 3 seconds | Power overload: 1 beep every 3 seconds (overtemperature uses the same pattern) | Battery fault (failed battery test): continuous beep | Press ESC; it beeps again if the alarm status changes |
The SmartPro manual adds one sound that is not an alarm: a slight clicking while the VOLTAGE CORRECTION LED is lit means the UPS is correcting high or low line voltage without the battery, which is normal.
What the self-test result means
SmartPro, OmniSmart, BC Pro and LCDT units run a self-test of about 10 seconds that switches the UPS to battery to test it under load. On SmartPro, OmniSmart and BC Pro units, connected equipment can stay on during the test. Do not unplug the UPS to test the battery: the SmartPro manual warns that it removes safe electrical grounding.
- Overload light stays lit and the alarm keeps sounding after the test: the outlets are overloaded. Unplug some equipment and repeat the test until the light clears.
- Battery warning or replace battery light stays lit: let the UPS recharge for 12 hours and repeat the self-test. If the light stays on, the battery needs service or replacement.
- LCDT units: the screen reads PAS when the test passes. Replacing the battery resets the battery indicator.
LCDT series: the five fault conditions
On SMART1500LCDT, OMNI1500LCDT and SMART1300LCDT units, a severe fault cuts power to the battery-backed outlets and the LCD reports one of five fault conditions:
| # | Fault | What the manual says |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Output short circuit, output cutoff | Remove the source of the short and restart the UPS |
| 2 | Output overload, output cutoff | Remove the source of the overload and restart the UPS |
| 3 | Battery overcharge | Not user-clearable: needs troubleshooting and repair |
| 4 | Bad and severely discharged battery | Replace the UPS battery |
| 5 | Output voltage high in battery mode | Not user-clearable: needs troubleshooting and repair |
SmartOnline: alarm and fault codes
SmartOnline units (SmartOnline service) sort what they report into silent events, alarms with a 3-second beep on some, and faults with a continuous beep and the red LED. A selection from the manual’s alarm table, with its actions:
| Code | Display | Meaning | Action in the manual |
|---|---|---|---|
| 001 | AC LOSS | Mains AC below charger level | Check the AC mains |
| 004 | AMB. TEMP. ALARM | Ambient temperature high | Check room temperature and blocked ventilation |
| 604 | BATTERY LOW | Battery level or runtime below its threshold | Check the mains, prepare to shut off the load |
| 60D | NO BATTERY | Battery not present | Check battery connections or an open fuse |
| 612 | BAT TEST ABORTED | Battery test conditions not met | Online or HE mode, load above 10%, battery at least 80%, no other alarm |
| 802 | IMMINENT SHUTOFF | Shutdown imminent on low battery | Prepare for shutdown |
| 806 | EMERGENCY OFF | Emergency stop | Check whether RPO is active |
| 80E | OVLD PREALARM | Output above the pre-alarm threshold (102% by default) | Check the setting and the load |
| 810 | POWER OVERLOAD | Output power overload | Check the load |
| Code | Display | Potential cause in the manual |
|---|---|---|
| 007 | FAN FAULT | A fan does not work normally, or the fan detection circuit is abnormal |
| 107 | INPUT BAD WIRING | Refer to Site Wiring Fault |
| 500 | CHARGER FAULT | Charger internal failure |
| 607 | BATTERY FAULT | Battery needs replacement or is faulty |
| 706 | UPS TEMP. FAULT | Internal temperature high; the UPS went to bypass or stopped |
| 805 | OUTPUT SHORTED | Short circuit on the output |
Overtemperature on a SmartOnline runs in three stages:
- At the warning level, the alarm sounds and the UPS stays in its current mode.
- Another 10°C higher, it moves to bypass, or shuts down if bypass cannot be used; in bypass the equipment is powered but not protected.
- Once the temperature is 5°C below the warning level, it returns to normal operation.
If backup time is shorter than expected, the batteries need charging or service: the manual’s step is 48 hours on utility power.
The UPS will not turn on
- Make sure the UPS is plugged into a live AC outlet.
- Press and hold the power button for one second; LCDT and SmartPro units beep once when they start.
- On LCDT units, if the resettable input circuit breaker has tripped, remove some load and press it in to reset it.
- On SmartOnline units, check the input connections; if the status menu shows “Remote Power Off”, the RPO input is active.
- If it still does not start, it needs service.
Charging and storage
A new LCDT unit works at once, but its full runtime is available only after 24 hours of charging. In storage, the SmartPro manual says to recharge every three months for 4 to 6 hours, because batteries left discharged for long periods lose capacity permanently.
When to call a technician
- The battery warning stays on after a 12-hour recharge and a second self-test.
- An LCDT battery overcharge or output-voltage-high fault, or a SmartOnline fault code that returns after the cause is removed.
- A SmartOnline that keeps transferring to bypass, or overtemperature that returns with clear vents.
- The UPS will not start with a live outlet and a reset breaker.
