Tripp Lite three-phase / SmartRack families we service

The three-phase rack-mount and modular UPS systems we encounter most often in Canadian enterprise IT and industrial environments:

  • SU40K / SU40KX: 40 kVA three-phase modular online UPS. Mid-tier enterprise datacenter rooms, healthcare core IT.
  • SU60K / SU60KX: 60 kVA three-phase modular. Larger enterprise datacenter pods, multi-rack high-density compute, government datacenter infrastructure.
  • SU80K / SU80KX: 80 kVA three-phase modular. Top of the SmartRack range for the largest single-system deployments before stepping up to parallel-N+1.
  • SU20K3 / SU20K3X: 20 kVA three-phase smaller-form-factor modular for branch datacenters and edge facilities.
  • SUTX-series: three-phase external maintenance bypass and battery cabinets used alongside the modular SmartRack chassis.
  • Legacy three-phase Tripp Lite SUTX / SU60KTV models: older generations still in active enterprise service, supported through end-of-service-life replacement parts and capacitor service.

Common deployment contexts

  • Enterprise datacenter: colocation facilities, on-prem datacenter rooms, hyperscale supplier rooms running 40-80 kVA SmartRack as the room-level UPS feeding multiple racks of compute.
  • Telecom central offices and head-ends: ISP head-ends, fiber aggregation huts, broadcast transmitter rooms where the SmartRack protects -48VDC plant feeders and AC control systems.
  • Healthcare core IT: hospital datacenter rooms running EHR clusters, PACS imaging, radiology and lab IT where outage windows have direct patient-care impact.
  • Industrial and manufacturing: process control rooms, DCS / SCADA cores, mining and resource site main control centers, oil and gas measurement and analyzer racks.
  • Government and defense IT: federal, provincial and municipal datacenter infrastructure where SmartRack three-phase systems often sit behind tendered maintenance contracts.
  • Financial services: bank datacenter rooms, trading floor support infrastructure, regulatory continuity sites.

What we service on SmartRack three-phase systems

Battery cabinet replacement

Three-phase SmartRack systems run on external battery cabinets, strings of 32-40 sealed lead-acid (or increasingly lithium-ion) cells wired in series and parallel to deliver the required DC bus voltage. Cabinet replacement is invasive:

  • System transfer to maintenance bypass (requires a working external bypass switch)
  • 4 to 6 hour scheduled service window
  • Battery breaker open, cabinet de-energized and confirmed dead
  • Old string removal, each VRLA battery typically 30-50 lb, four-person crews for larger cabinets
  • New string installation with torque-spec terminal connections and inter-cell jumpers
  • Battery breaker close, controlled charge cycle, full capacity test before returning to online
  • Old battery disposal under Environment Canada hazardous waste regulations, recycling certificate provided

For sites moving from VRLA to lithium-ion cabinets, we handle the chemistry-change configuration on the SmartRack’s battery management, float voltage, end-of-discharge cutoff, temperature compensation, charge profile.

Capacitor service

DC link capacitors in three-phase UPS systems degrade after 5-7 years and are a leading cause of inverter or PFC faults on legacy SmartRack chassis. Scheduled capacitor inspection during preventive maintenance (and proactive replacement at the 5-7 year mark) heads off the most common unscheduled outage cause.

Inverter / PFC fault diagnosis

The most common emergency call on three-phase SmartRack is the inverter-fault or PFC-fault alarm. Causes range from a single failed IGBT to control-board failure to a real overload event upstream. We diagnose at the module level and repair on-site with full Tripp Lite three-phase expertise.

Parallel system support

SmartRack three-phase systems are frequently deployed in N+1 or 2N parallel configurations for redundancy. Adding capacity modules, troubleshooting load-share imbalance between paralleled units, and reconfiguring the static bypass system all require platform-specific knowledge, which we maintain in-house.

SmartRack preventive maintenance, what a typical Canadian datacenter needs

For a 40-80 kVA SmartRack feeding a Canadian datacenter room, the standard PM cadence we recommend:

  • Quarterly PM visits: visual inspection, battery test, capacitor inspection, log review, alarm history. Four visits per year.
  • Annual battery string load test: full discharge of battery cabinet under controlled load to verify rated runtime.
  • 5-7 year capacitor swap: proactive DC link capacitor replacement.
  • Battery cabinet replacement: every 5-7 years for VRLA chemistry, 8-10 years for lithium-ion cabinets.
  • Firmware and network card updates: security patches and feature updates rolled in during regular PM visits.

End-of-life three-phase SmartRack support

Several older Tripp Lite three-phase generations are at or past Eaton’s end-of-service-life. We provide post-EOSL support including spare parts (where available through brokered channels), capacitor and fan service for as long as the chassis is mechanically sound, and migration planning into Eaton’s current three-phase portfolio.

Migration paths to current-generation Eaton three-phase

For sites where SmartRack is approaching end-of-service-life, Eaton’s current three-phase portfolio provides clean migration paths:

  • Eaton 93PM / 93PX (20-200 kVA modular): direct successor positioning for SmartRack 40-80 kVA. Hot-swap power modules, scalable single-system or parallel-N+1, transformer-free design.
  • Eaton 9395P (225 to 1200 kVA): step up for sites that need more capacity than SmartRack ever offered.
  • Eaton 91PS / 93PS (8-160 kVA): value-positioned three-phase for cost-sensitive applications.

For migration from legacy Tripp Lite SmartRack to current-gen Eaton 93PM, 93PX or 9395P, our service network provides drop-in consulting, site survey, electrical infrastructure review (transformers, breakers, generator interface), runtime sizing, battery cabinet specification, decommission and recycling.
